Krispy Kreme Doughnuts In Shanghai

Business, Current Affairs, Food Add comments

I spotted this walking around Wu Jiang Lu after a visit to Marks & Spencer at the weekend. 10th December 2009 is the day Krispy Kreme comes to Shanghai. I can feel my waistline expanding as I write this! (Apologies for the poor image, all I had was my cell phone.)

ahhhh you spotted it too! i was delighted when i saw it over the weekend too(yay!!!)can’t wait…. can’t wait…

  2. CP Says:

Founded in 1937? So waistlines in China will match the current state in America in approximately 72 years time then.

  3. WoAi Says:

@tinkerbell – I’ll be honest, I am NOT looking forward to the opening because the last thing I need is a few extra calories that will mean working even longer in the gym.

@CP – No your logic is somewhat flawed because companies coming to China generally look for accelerated growth not at the same pace as when they developed in their original countries. So we can look forward to overweight doughnut eaters in about 6 months from now!

  4. T. Says:

Awesome, with Carl’s Jr and Krispy Kreme along with McD’s, KFC, Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts, the US will win their war with China. Or at least turn them into the fat-asses that we are.

  5. shopgirls shanghai Says:

this is FRIGGIN dangerous, esp considering I walk past this place every single monday to friday!!! ARGH!!!!!!!

  6. WoAi Says:

@Shopgirl – It’s okay just have a few less shen jians and you’ll be fine.

@T – Huh? Burgers aren’t fattening are they?

  7. Anthony Says:

    another Woai first !!!

  8. Anthony Says:

how many donut brands are there in shanghai now ?

  9. CP Says:

@WoAi: Ah, I stand corrected. As you note, there will be a branch in every single shopping centre, along the lines of the Starbucks/Subway/McD/KFC model. So there will be no excuse for the locals not to stuff their faces.

  10. WoAi Says:

@Anthony – Well there’s Donut King, Dunkin’ Donuts and soon Krispy Kreme.

@CP – Excellent, the future looks bright!

  11. Anthony Says:

do they still have Mister Donut here ?

which one is your favorite ?

  12. tinkerbell Says:

the key word here is moderation :) it’s definitely not something you have everyday! so indulging in one donut once in a blue moon is not going to expand your waistline ;)

  13. Rich Says:

@ tinkerbell – but it’s not one donut we’re talking about here. They MAKE you buy them in dozens!

  14. Angie in Texas Says:

OoOoOo, krispy kreme donuts are indeed DANGEROUS. i LOVE them – there’s one right around the corner from us. we indulge every now and again. when they opened here a few years back, the lines were CRAZY long, but then again i live in “fat” antonio, texas . . .

  15. WoAi Says:

@Anthony – Krispy Kreme is by far my favourite. The Dunkin’ Donut stuff just isn’t as light. I think they do still have Mister Donut here, aimed more at locals.

@Tinkerbell – Yes, absolutely, but if people buy once in a blue moon then they may not survive. I think they’re counting on people becoming addicted, like many people are to Starbucks. And trust me when I say “addiction” is not too strong a word based on people I know and their Starbucks “habit”.

@Angie – Yeah, my first experience was in Toronto. We drove half way across the city and everyone got excited coz the light was on meaning they were baking a new batch which means everyone gets a free sample.

  16. Anthony Says:

I can’t wait till they open then !

  17. lei Says:

i believe they have KK in hong kong, might be closed now. I remember i had two while i was in hk, don’t remember how much it cost, but i remember it wasn’t cheap, compared to the u.s price.

  18. Anthony Says:

hi lei, how are things ?

  19. T. Says:

The HK Krispy Kremes are indeed all closed.

Mister Donut isn’t bad – in fact I prefer them to Dunkin’ – which I don’t think is done quite right here.

I would be really happy with a Winchells or even a Shipley’s. Mmmm. Shipley’s.

  20. shopgirl Says:

i had a very nice dunkindonut donut yesterday, strawberry with some sort of filling inside.
I also really like mister donut.

and i had KK for the first time in Korea, sooo good!!! actually it’s not so bad. one original glazed has 200 calories. that is really not bad at all, that’s just a big banana + some grapes.

  21. Rich Says:

LOL @ shopgirl – interesting comparison but I think you need to focus less on the figures and more on the nutritional content. Simple vs complex carbs, saturated fats, sucrose vs fructose, etc, etc.

  22. jill Says:

    Dear Peter

You claim I no longer read your blog. Here’s a comment to prove otherwise.

    Love,
    Jill

PS. Pictures of your smexay face up on my blog. Feel free to steal.

  23. Anthony Says:

    love ? – lol

  24. lei Says:

anthony, do i know you? (not trying to offend)

  25. Mike Says:

I wonder if In & Out will open up here ?

  26. Angie in Texas Says:

did NO ONE else find the idea of shopgirl’s “big banana + some grapes” [i was thinking specifically of 2] funny?!

  27. WoAi Says:

Lei – Yes, KK closed in Hongkong, they couldn’t survive there although I was lucky enough to have some there while they were operating (small shop basement of Times Square).

Shopgirl – I only like the original glazed although my 5 year old nephew T (no relation to T on this blog) loves the one with sprinkles on top. I loved your comparison to one BIG banana and two grapes you saucy thing! 200 calories is also about 20 minutes on the treadmill, so it’s a high price to pay!

Mike – I think we’ve discussed this already. In & Out can never come here because they only use fresh beef from cows that live(d) within 3 miles of the shop or something like that. I will have to go when I am in California some time.

Jill – Leaving a comment is not proof that you still READ the blog, but thanks for stopping by.

Angie – Yeah, I thought it was hilarious, but not for the reason you did, get your mind out of the gutter.

Lei – I think Anthony is just a really friendly chap.

  28. Angie in Texas Says:

i’m a married woman now woai, i need to live vicariously through something . . .

  29. Rich Says:

Wow they must have huge grapes over there in Texas!

  30. Angie in Texas Says:

    indeed! =D

  31. Miss Jane Says:

I heard someone had bought the rights to open Tim Horton in China soon. Just wait for one of those bad boys open and you’ll see how it kicks @$$ to KK (yucky)…Tick Tock

  32. Jen Says:

@Miss Jane – Where did you hear the news from? I was wondering how come they don’t open Tim Hortons here.

  33. shopgirls shanghai Says:

Mmmmmmmm Tim Hortons ice cappuchino and munchkies….Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

let’s just all get fat! who friggin cares?

  34. WoAi Says:

Shopgirl – You have youth on your side but when you get to my age, you need to get whatever you can in your favour, and being old and fat is worse than just being old. In short, I care!

  35. Miss Jane Says:

Tim Horton’s food doesn’t make you fat! Its what money can buy that makes you fat!

  36. Miss Jane Says:

    Hi Jen,

A little bird told me that awhile ago! I wanted to open a franchise of Timmy’s in Shanghai but it seems a lot harder to do now!

  37. Jen Says:

Thanks for the info, Miss Jane.

I like to eat their sandwiches and soup too.
Tim Hortons is way better than Starbucks. Tim Hortons has more selections of food than Starbucks.
