Shopboy Shanghai

Yes folks, it’s Fashion Friday once again, even though it’s only Tuesday. Some lesser sites only have weekly shoe updates, but with the second fashion post in as many days, nobody can accuse WoAi of not providing his readers with value for money!

My recent trip to Hongkong was not really to protect the Olympic torch, they had enough guys surrounding the thing and very little (actually none) protesters to deal with, so instead, I went shopping. If you didn’t know, Hongkong is a shoppers paradise. It’s a free port, so there’s no consumption taxes to pay, which means many imported products are almost half the price compared to the China mainland. So, the more you buy, the more you save, or that’s what I keep telling myself at least!Of course, it helps that the RMB is now 1.12 to the Hongkong Dollar when just a few years ago it was 0.94 to the dollar. So here are some of my purchases for the summer season which is already upon us, proudly modelled by yours truly (one of the advantages of having your own photo studio at home).

Agnes B striped tee shirt, 800 RMB.

Ralph Lauren Polo multi coloured “Big Pony” shirt, 684 RMB.

I should explain that I won’t keep the collar up when I wear it in public and I also don’t wear my sunglasses on my head! That’s all for now, but more “Shopboy Shanghai” posts will follow.

  1. woo-hoo #1 AGAIN!

(i have no idea what the post is about . . . i saw there were no comments and immediately clicked on comments . . . i’ll be right back!)

  2. i really like the big pony polo. the color is really great on you! the agnes b is nice too though . . .

  3. Rich says:

Yeah, I like the 2nd one better. Where’s your watch???

  4. Sue says:

Woai – LOL….I know I had requested you to write more amusing topics….you really went all out this time. Thanks for the entertainment. You are really funny. LOL

  5. Woaizhongguo says:

Angie – I’m happy you get to “arrive” first again! Yeah I like the green colour. The Agnes B was the work of a great sales assistant. I never would have picked that but he insisted I try it on and I thought yeah, that works. And so did the two shirts and the bag (look out for these in future posts).

Rich – It’s pretty hot in Shanghai now, so I often take off the watch when I get home to let my wrist breathe. Oops, I mean, I lost it and if someone was to buy me a new one for my birthday that’d be dandy!

Sue – WoAi aims to please his readership and reward them for their loyal following. But no nudity I’m afraid unless it’s someone elses.

  6. T. says:

I once decided that anyone who wears their collar up on a polo shirt deserves a punch in the neck, but I ran out of energy after walking around for 3 minutes at Bar Rouge one night.

  7. Woaizhongguo says:

T – Those “fashionable” French people somehow think it’s just SO cool to have the collars up all the time, but it’s not like you ever need an excuse to punch a French guy!!

  8. Rich says:

You mean there are French chavs, too? I thought we had exclusive rights here in the UK.

  9. Woaizhongguo says:

They’re not French Chavs, they’re just French!

  10. lei says:

and don’t forget, all the american douche-bags that likes to wear the collars up.

  11. Woaizhongguo says:

LOL, I am loving this. I had no idea there were so many people who shared my views on this!!

  12. shopgirl says:

    Love it ^_^

I’m going to Hongkong this summer, I will have to ask you for some tips before I go :)

  13. Sue says:

All i just want to know is….what happened to GQ………

  14. Sue says:

    sorry, minor aftershock here…

  15. Woaizhongguo says:

Sue – Drunk again? If not, what are you on about?

Shopgirl – You don’t need tips for HK it’s a shoppers paradise and it’s just impossible not to find amazing bargains almost everywhere. But if you have any specific requests I can see what I can do.

  16. The day that I can buy a striped tshirt for $100+ and think nothing of it, is the day I will be truly happy. I am actually not familiar at all with Agnes B…

    polo looks good :)

and how do you do the black background on your pictures? I’m assuming its photo editing, but hey, maybe you do have a black wall in your abode.

  17. Woaizhongguo says:

Picasso – I think the difference is I have been working for 17 years and you are still in school but I take your point. When I was in high school, ther were several sports brands (FILA) that were VERY popular but equally expensive and most kids would only dream of owning a FILA top. I just realised this Italian brand is having a bit of a revivial and I also realised that now, it’s so much more affordable, so I can finally live the dream (I actually tried on a top in HK but luggage space meant I had to let it go)!

Agnes B is a French designer and very popular in Asia. I suggest you check out the website:

Of course you’d say Polo looks good, LOL, but thanks, I agree!

As for the black background, I don’t want to rub salt into the wound, but I have a complete photographic studio in my apartment (have you seen Hard Candy!!!) and so the black background is simply a black background made from a roll of thick paper, no trickery involved. I have white and black and they cost 200 rmb each not including the stand to hang it from.

  18. T. says:

He actually uses the photography studio for his side business at or 很黄很暴力

  19. Woaizhongguo says:

T – That’s supposed to be a secret, but yes, WoAi is just one of my aliases and Porn King is another!

  20. shopgirl says:

so i guess i don’t get a global refund when i shop in hk, which makes it not cheaper at all compared to if i buy stuff everywhere except for europe ( as Im a european union citizen).

anyhow, the HK currency is quite low so I’ve decided to buy a designer bag in HK, am thinking of Chanel 2-55 and wear it for the rest of my life :P

to be honest, I don’t like Agnes B at all, I own a dress from them, I have never worn it in public for some reason.

  21. Woaizhongguo says:

Shoppers – When I go home to England, the prices AFTER I deduct the tax refund, is very close to HK prices on the streets. An example would be the Rolex I bought from Harrods a few years ago, so you are correct. BUT it only applies to big ticket items because many shops charge a “handling” fee which eats into the savings and if you buy anything in England for less than 50 pounds, it’s not worth getting a tax refund, so it is cheaper in HK.

  22. Amanda says:

Ralph Lauren Polo multi coloured “Big Pony” shirt, 684 RMB.
this one is nice on u,much better than agens B la~(oops…)
no need to wear sunglass…u have a electric eye,lol

  23. Woaizhongguo says:

Amanda – Thanks for your comments. It’s just a different look; one American style, one European (slightly more fresh, slightly more gay) style, but I like them both!

  24. Swiss James says:

In the first photo you look a bit like a rent boy that’s showing up at a business man’s hotel room, looking keen and eager.

In the second one it’s like he paid you with fake bills and you’re back to demand real money.

I mean that in a good way, obviously.

  25. Woaizhongguo says:

Swiss – You flatter me. I haven’t been able to get work as a rent boy for over 5 years. Hard times, but I did put some money away during the good times, thank God!
