Dallas Is Back!

Back in its heyday

This ought to be a good test of my readership demographic. Do not adjust your sets, Dallas is back after the last series ended 21 years ago. That’s right, Bobby and JR Ewing are at it again, with a few of the other original cast members (Charlene Tilton who has not aged well and Steve Kanaly) as well as some new, younger cast members, who I imagine will gradually take over the main roles as the original members fade out.

The Ewings 2012

It was very weird watching the first episode, a bit like going back in time, remembering things I thought I’d forgotten (like the Oil Baron’s ball which seems to have become the Cattle Baron’s Ball). John Ross Jr and Christopher are now grown up and it’s very clear that they will be carrying on their rivalry from where their fathers left off. Effectively they seem to be mirroring their fathers, so John Ross (Josh Henderson from Desperate Housewives) is the despicable, conniving one that we are all going to love to hate, while Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe, also from Desperate Housewives), like his father, is always trying to do the right thing.

It seems they’re sticking with the tried and trusted formula that made the original such a huge success – lots of steamy sex scenes, over the top acting and implausible plot twists – but that just means if you liked the original, you’re going to enjoy the reboot.

The big question is, has the TV viewing world moved on and is there still a place for this type of show. We’ll see after the first (10 episode) season viewing figures are in. My bet is it won’t get close to the success of the original, but I will still enjoy this nostalgic return, even if it’s short lived.

    Charlene Tilton, whoa, how about Linda Gray. Had to actually double take on that photo.

  2. WoAi says:

    @Hopfrog – A fan of the poisoned dwarf are we? Linda Gray looks remarkably similar to how she looked 20 years ago.

    In other news, Paul McCartney is 70 today.

    @Wiseman – A very shrewd observation!

    @Miss Saigon – You can also download it from bit torrents now.

    @Anthony – I’m bored with pretty girls. Ugly girls excite me now. Which is lucky because they’re the only ones who take any notice of me!

    @Bittermelon – 70? Really? How did I miss that.

    DEar Wo Ai,

    I am a U.S. based student doing a research paper on fast food in China. Might you be able to spare a moment on the phone to answer a few questions?

    @Heinrich – Thanks for noticing. Usually nobody does. I was having some security issues (hacking) which may or may not now be resolved. Apologies.
