My ex-boss – who might be reading this, so I should quickly add, is also a very good friend – is in town for a few days, all the way from Canada, exploring some business opportunities with her business partner. It’s all very top secret, so I have no idea what the project is about, but I think they’re trying to set up a chain of Calgary-style Chinese restaurants in Shanghai.
I can’t say I didn’t see it coming – after ambitiously launching itself as the Rolls Royce of Shanghai clubs less than (or perhaps more than) two years ago, Attica is closing down on 14th September as reported in SH Mag and Shanghaiist. They did a great marketing job with the launch. I remember some of my female friends changing their MSN tags to say things like “Love Attica”, the precursor to “Love China” I suppose and of course, it was the venue selected by WoAi for his hugely successful 40th birthday bash. But unfortunately for Attica, not everyone is willing to put down 15,000 RMB for the privilege of having exclusive use of their directors booth, and WoAi doesn’t turn 40 every weekend, so the money eventually stopped rolling in.
I’ll miss those perfect summer nights out on the terrace and fooling some of my friends in the hip hop / R&B room into thinking that the black guy with shades was Puff Daddy / P Diddy (even though he was only about 5 foot 2 inches tall!).
I may have to try and get down there one more time to pay my respects before the doors close forever.
The M&S grand opening may still be a few weeks away yet, but S&M is already alive and kicking in Shanghai. On Saturday I attended SPANK! which is a new S&M fetish party hosted at Shanghai Studio. The venue is like a secret underground labyrinth with 11 small, darkly lit rooms and 4 bars, all accessible from a very nondescript entrance at the end of a lane just off Huai Hai Road.

The place was very busy despite being open only to pre-registered guests, although there were very few people actually in costume other than the staff, which was disappointing, but perhaps everyone was afraid of being the only one in costume and so decided to play it safe. In fact, I was one of the few who actually made an effort. Although not in costume myself, I did have my sex slave for the evening wearing a red studded collar and chain which was attached to my wrist, which did seem to get a lot of approving looks from the other customers.
After the party I headed to a regular bar to meet Swiss James and Dingle and got looks of disbelief from some of the customers as I entered, still dragging my companion by collar and chain. After a few minutes, I decided it was all a bit too much for the prudish crowd (I’m talking of course about James and Dingle) and I reluctantly released my sub from her restraints for the rest of the evening.
