Slumdog Millionaire

slumdog

It came out last Friday (9th January) in the UK and is one of the most talked about movies at the moment. And of course, it’s already widely available on the streets of Shanghai on DVD for a mere 7 RMB (0.7 pounds)! So last night I stopped by my favourite DVD store on Da Gu Lu and picked up a copy and I have to say it is without a doubt, the best film I have seen so far this year (yes, yes, it’s also the only film I have seen this year).

It’s a British drama based in India, with mostly Indian actors, (except the lead role played by Brit, Dev Patel) directed by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle and is ultimately a feelgood movie, despite being set in the slums of Mumbai with quite a few scenes that are not for the squeamish. It’s also a welcome change from most of the rubbish that comes out of Hollywood these days (that’s garbage if you’re from across the pond). And with so much focus on China these days, it’s nice to have our neighbour take some of the spotlight for a change.

Despite huge critical acclaim and winning 4 Golden Globe awards, I personally don’t see it following No Country For Old Men and cleaning up at the Oscars on 22nd February, but nevertheless it’s got to be on everyone’s must see list now that it’s been awarded the WoAi seal of approval. Insert your favourite cliche here : Go see it, miss it at your peril, two thumbs up etc.

Oh, and don’t miss the dance sequence right at the end of the movie. In fact, make sure you get out of your seat and join in – you’ll be glad you did.

Paul Newman Rides Off Into The Sunset

I don’t usually post twice in the same day, so you know this is no ordinary day. I woke up this morning to the news that Paul Newman has passed away at the age of 83. I can’t think of another actor whose films I’ve enjoyed watching more over the years, from Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid from the 1960s up till more recent movies like Message In A Bottle and a whole load in between. I challenge anyone to name a favourite Newman movie. It’s just not possible, because there are too many to choose from.

But he was so much more than just a great actor, with his Newman’s Own food business generating over 200 million dollars for charities. And how many Hollywood stars these days stay faithfully married for 50 years (famously quoted in a Playboy interview as saying ‘I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?’).

The world could do with a few more Paul Newmans, but sadly instead, there’s one less today.
